Understanding Your Growth Trajectory

Learning from your experiences can bend your trajectory upward toward Excellence.

You are reading this because you are interested in the word Growth. The meaning of the word is trivial. The steps we take, however, are profound. Let us parse out the components of the picture above.

The Black curve: Let us consider the classic, memoryless, aspect of our lives. It is one where we ride up and down the usual sinusoidal curve. The rises and the falls are constant and the average path over time is a flat line. In short, there is no learning, or even awareness, from previous experiences. We take life as it is and roll with it. Good idea!

The Red curve: Sometimes, we do notice things from past events that we choose to ignore. We may, often unwittingly, fail to harvest learnings from previous events (both positive and negative). This puts us in a place where we believe that past learnings are useless, and hence they can be ignored. However, this adds to our handicap in approaching a similar future event (that could have benefited from the learnings from a past one)! The consequences are that we tend to make the same mistakes in the hope that it will play out differently this time! And we all know how that goes! Our highs can be dizzying-highs (the gambler’s luck), and the lows can be devastating. Overall, our lives have now taken a downward trajectory. In addition, there is progressively greater volatility!

The Blue Curve: I fondly call this “the path of the sage”. When we develop greater awareness, we actively engage in the gathering of ALL useful information from our past experiences. We appreciate what we are good at, what we did well, and what we enjoyed in the process. This cocktail of learnings, from both happy and sad events, is a potent one. This is the fountain we drink from to finetune our next engagements, resulting in modulated highs, and softer lows. Overall, our quality of life has taken an upswing. In addition, our energetic pulsations are smoother and stable. Ah yes, we have GROWTH!
